The California condor, North America's largest land bird, nearly disappeared forever. By 1974, only 30 or so birds remained when Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect condor habitat.

Red wolves were declared extinct in the wild in 1980, surviving only in captivity. In 1987, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made a bold decision: release captive-bred red wolves into Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge's 152,000 acres of protected pocosin wetlands, swamp forests, and marshes. The refuge became the world's only place where red wolves roam wild.

Peregrine Falcons at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia. In 1999, peregrine falcons were removed from the endangered species list—one of the Endangered Species Act's most dramatic success stories.

Friends Groups Transform Passion Into Impact

Across the National Wildlife Refuge System, nearly 159 independent nonprofit Friends groups serve as the lifeblood of their local refuges. These dedicated community organizations raise funds for critical habitat projects, contribute tens of thousands of volunteer hours annually, lead educational programs, staff visitor centers, remove invasive plants, and advocate for refuge needs.
