What is a
Wildlife Refuge
and Why Should I Care About Them?
Wildlife refuges are special places set aside to protect habitats and the wildlife that call them home.
Our country’s over 570 national wildlife refuges offer several benefits including:
➡️ Conserving lands and waters.
➡️ Protecting critical habitat for endangered species of fish, plants, and wildlife.
➡️ Safeguarding your home and community from severe weather patterns
➡️ Providing opportunities to learn more about wildlife and their habitats.
➡️ Offering world-class recreation like kayaking, hiking, and fishing.
Beyond these benefits, national wildlife refuges offer us all the chance to preserve our nation’s shared natural heritage and to engage with nature near home.
When we support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System, we’re supporting a cleaner, brighter future.

Our partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
America’s Wildlife Refuges is proud to be an official partner of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Public Lands Alliance has partnered with the USFWS to create America’s Wildlife Refuges, increasing awareness of and support for the National Wildlife Refuge System.
We work alongside USFWS, funding programs to improve the accessibility and health of your wildlife refuges.
America’s Wildlife Refuges has already been able to fund several successful programs but safeguarding our nation’s habitats and communities requires all of us.
Whether it’s providing the only remaining roosting grounds for the endangered Mississippi Sandhill Crane or giving children in urban areas a chance to experience nearby nature, wildlife refuges show us that when we work together anything is possible. For wildlife, and for future generations.
Help us preserve our shared natural heritage today!
Fun Fact!
There’s a wildlife refuge within an hour of all major US airports. See for yourself how close you are to nature.
